A Week at the Farm Market Day 2: Monday

MondaysMonday is the preparation day for the next day of flower picking.

Sundays have a tendency to blend into Mondays. There’s no clear cut off line. Anything I didn’t get finished Sunday, I make sure to get finished Monday because I know there will be no time the rest of the week.

I finish all my restocking and special orders and put my weekly blog post live after a little proofreading and editing. Anything I didn’t get planted or tended (or harvested in the case of autumn) yesterday has to be done today. The grounds could always stand for a little cultivating as well.

After the “finishing” is done, the rest of Monday is devoted to getting ready for the next day’s flower picking. I fill all the buckets and vases I’ll be needing. If the buckets have been used for digging veggies, they may need to be scrubbed out first. Once they’re filled, I carry them all inside the house, making sure my one indoor-only cat doesn’t sneak out the door when I do.

There’s usually a tarp (or 2, or 3, or 4) full of leaves left over from Friday night’s picking and stripping, so those need to be dumped. Most of the flower leaves get dumped in a empty field and tilled in. They make great nutrients for the soil. I also use them as mulch, carefully putting the leaves around pumpkin plants to keep the weeds out.

If it’s sunflower season, those are done on a separate tarp. Sunflower leaves are edible Mondaysand the cows absolutely love them. The trick is getting the tarp over the fence. They’re usually so heavy with sunflower leaves that I have to pitch a few piles of them over the fence with a pitchfork until the tarp is light enough to pick up. The cows dance back and forth waiting for me to move faster and give them the tarp full of sunflowers leaves. It’s basically the equivalent of dessert to them, except they get the benefit of having their dessert be healthy. Needless to say the cows love sunflower season as much as I do.
