First Experiences with Qi Gong

First Experiences with Qi Gong In August I had the opportunity to experience my first session of Qi Gong. It was one of the strongest energies I’ve ever encountered.

Qi Gong is ancient Chinese system of energy working, which can also be used as energy healing. Actually pronounced “chee,” the word Qi itself means “energy” more specifically universal life-force energy, and is the same energy referred to in acupuncture and Reiki (sometimes spelled chi or ki). Despite the word looking like the name of a character out of the Star Wars prequels (I’m looking at you Liam Neeson), there is actually nothing science-fiction about Qi Gong. It’s a way of removing energy blocks in the Qi energy that flows through a person’s body, and therefore prompt healing in the body.

I had my first experience with the power of Qi Gong last August about a week after breaking my face. Due to the fragile nature of my face at the time, my acupuncture and craniosacral treatments had to be very light because my face couldn’t take much in the line of hands or needles touching it. Qi Gong was different, since it didn’t require any actual contact.

I’d never had a Qi Gong treatment, but I had heard of Qi Gong before and was open to the idea. My mother had had several sessions with Lisa B. O’Shea, a Rochester based Qi Gong practitioner and had very high regard for Lisa and Qi Gong in general, and recommended I have a session with Lisa.

When I arrived at the session, I had a pounding headache (it’s bound to happen when you get slammed in the head as hard as I did). Normally people would lay down during the session, but I had to sit more upright to prevent the bones in my face from separating. So Lisa accommodated by helping me to arrange the pillows so they’d hold me more upright for the session.

The session itself consisted of Lisa basically “massaging” my body’s energy. She didn’t actually have to touch me (a huge benefit for my face), but rather worked in the energy field surrounding my body. Having already been a regular receiver of acupuncture treatments and a practitioner of laying on of hands myself, I was not exactly new to feeling energy and energy work. This Qi Gong, however, was something entirely new. It was some of the most powerful energy work I’ve ever felt.

I’m the type of person who NEVER EVER falls asleep during something like this. I’ve never fallen asleep during acupuncture (half the time I can’t even fall asleep when I’m supposed to be sleeping at night), but during my Qi Gong treatment, the energy was so different, that I did in fact fall asleep. And fairly quickly too. By the time I woke up Lisa was just finishing her energy massage and the headache I’d had when I first came was completely gone.

Before leaving, Lisa gave me a series of breathing and physical exercises to do (not yoga, but somewhat related). I did them religiously every morning and watched my energy level quickly return to what it had been pre-facebreaking. So while I wasn’t exactly happy about breaking my face, I am glad that at least something good came out of it; it led to me to experience the wonders of Qi Gong.
