Hanging Tomatoes

Hanging TomatoesLike having tomatoes, but don’t like bending over to pick them? Try growing some hanging tomatoes.

Many types of tomatoes will grow very well in hanging baskets, putting their luscious fruits at perfect height for picking. Cherry tomatoes varieties are especially receptive to hanging baskets. Hanging baskets are also a good option for those with limited garden space.

There are many baskets available at garden supply stores that can be used for hanging baskets. The ones lined with brown moss are especially good a maintaining moisture content. However, if you want to keep things simple, you can just cut the tops off of old juice or milk cartons, poke a few drainage holes in the bottom and fill the container with dirt. (Of course you’ll also need to poke a few holes at the top to run a string through so you can actually hang your baskets).

Whatever type of container you decide on, make sure you only use one tomato plant per hanging basket or they will get too crowded. Keep your hanging baskets in a sunny spot out away from heavy wind exposure and be sure to keep them well watered when the temperatures rise. The tomato plants will start by growing up, then gently trail over the sides of the basket just like a hanging flower. Besides being a convenience for picking, the draped foliage and bright fruits are often just as pretty as the most exquisite floral displays. So you get to have aesthetic and well as nutritional value…does it get better than that?

Some of the best types of tomatoes for hanging baskets include: Tumbler, Hundreds and Thousands, Maskotka, Garden Pearl, Tumbling Tom Yellow, Tumbling Tom Red, and Silvery Fir Tree.
