Legolas Costume Tutorial Part 1 & 2: Jerkin, Leggings, Ears, Boots

This DIY Legolas costume can be made fairly inexpensively and with just some fairly basic sewing.

DIY Legolas Costume - How to Make a Legolas Costume

My siblings started calling me “the elf” after watching Lord of the Rings because I reminded them of Legolas for some reason, and the name stuck (which is how I ended up with my business name). So it’s only natural that I’d eventually do a DIY Legolas costume tutorial. I had a bit of red “leather” left over from the Wonder Woman costume how-to (watch it here if you missed it), so I used it for the bracers in this Legolas costume. However, if you pick up an old purse or brown jacket at a 2nd hand shop, then you won’t have to paint it as I did.

Legolas Costume Part 1:

The boots, leggings, undershirt, and belt for the Legolas costume can be picked up for a few dollars in a second hand shop. The elf ears I used can be purchased here from Aradani Studios. The jerkin is the only part of the DIY Legolas costume that requires any real sewing and the pattern is fairly simple.

You can download a free pdf pattern for the overlay part of the jerkin here. (It was originally made to fit me, so you may have to shrink or enlarge it depending on your size). This Legolas costume can either be worn with or without an elvish cloak (click here to learn how to make the elvish cloak) – And yes, I know I pronounce Legolas’ name weird…

Legolas Costume Part 2:

I was originally going to do the costume all as one tutorial, but it was getting a little long, so I broke it into 2 parts. So the second part of the tutorial regarding the ears and the rest of the costume.

And check back next week for the final part of the Legolas costume how-to, the bow, arrows, and quiver.

Hi! Just dropping this comment to say thank you for the incredible tutorial! My 7-y-o wanted to be Legolas for Halloween and your patterns & tutorial was very helpful, especially for the jerkin 🙂
