Save A Pillow

Have an old pillow whose cover is so thin that the stuffing has already begun falling out? It may seem like it’s ready for the trash, but don’t throw it out just yet. It’s unbelievably easy to save that old pillow.

Hand Quilted Pillow Case

If you have any small pieces of material lying around, you can easily cut them into square and triangular shapes and piece them together to make a quilt top. (If you don’t know how to sew, check out my hand sewing tutorial here.) When your top is about the size of your pillow, add in a square of quilt batting the same size as the pieced quilt top, and then add a piece of backing fabric the same size.

Old Pillow

By hand, sew some heart shapes and lines through all three layers creating a country-looking hand quilted pillow-sized square. Cut another piece of fabric the same size as the entire quilted piece and sew the two together with the right sides inside. Only sew three sides, leaving the fourth open.

Turn the pillow case right side out, and slide it over your old pillow like a slip cover. Don’t bother cutting off the old cover, just slide the whole thing into the new cover. Sew the open edge shut, and you have a pillow that looks brand new. – An easy upcycling project that keeps an old pillow out a landfill.
