Captain Kirk Star Trek The Motion Picture Uniform DIY
In this tutorial I’ll show how to make the worst uniforms in Star Fleet history (come on, we all know it’s true), the uniforms from Star Trek The Motion Picture.
MATERIALS USED:
1 gray long sleeved shirt
1 white turtleneck
1 pair of gray pants (same color as shirt)
Fabric fusion sheets
Sewing machine / Needle and white and black thread
Scissors
A few scrap pieces of 3mm craft foam
Sticky backed velcro
Gold puffy paint
Scrap pieces of cardboard
Gold adhesive foil
Glue that will stick to foil (I used Power-tac)
Black Metallic paint
White paint
Paintbrush
Most of the uniforms in the movie were made pretty much the same way (pajama style 😉 ) except Captain Kirk’s which had a white center down his tunic (still pajamas, just a little fancier than every one else’s). So I chose to make Kirk’s uniform for this tutorial.
If you want to make one of the other characters, just take out the white center. Also Captain Kirk’s uniform pants were straight all the way down, but all the other characters had a tuck right above the foot cutout. So if you making a different character, just run one stitch through the pants above the foot cutout to make the tuck.
If you don’t have the Fabric Fusion sheets in your area, you can simply sew the white part to the gray part of the tunic, but then you’ll see the seamlines. The Fabric Fusion allows you to attach the pieces with no visible seams, and it’s a permanent bond as well. You could also use fabric glue, or even hot glue, though if you use hot glue, you won’t ever be able to throw it in the dryer or you’ll melt it.
(And don’t mind my very un-Kirk-ish hair. I’ve misplaced the wig I usually use for it, so I just used my regular hair for this one).
