Bellatrix Part 2: Corset – DIY Bellatrix Lestrange Costume

Onto the corset! This is the second part of the requested DIY Bellatrix Lestrange costume to follow last week’s Bellatrix Dress tutorial. In this part of the tutorial I’ll show you how to make Bellatrix’s corset and the knife sheath that went with it.

DIY Bellatrix Lestrange Costume Part 2: Corset and Knife Sheath

MATERIALS USED:
Leg of an old pair of jeans
1 foot of fake black leather (I found in JoAnn Fabrics)
Scissors
Awl
Small piece of belt
Sewing machine or black thread and needle
Black yarn and large-eyed needle
18 silver eyelets
Eyelet pliers
Small pieces of 3mm craft foam
Plastic toy knife
Power-tac Glue

The corset Bellatrix wore was an underbust corset, so I didn’t put any boning in it. If you find you need boning to help it hold its shape, you can make boning channels by sewing two verticals lines about an inch apart in the fake leather and denim, for each piece of boning. Then just slip the boning into the channel between the fake leather and denim.

The fake leather fabric I used for this DIY Bellatrix Lestrange costume I found in JoAnn Fabrics in the costume fabrics section. I used a foot of it, but I’m short, so I have a short torso. If you’re taller, you might need to use a little more fabric.

The plastic knife I used for this costume, doesn’t have the same handle shape as Bellatrix’s, since her knife had a very specific handle shape. But since this one was only $1 at the local second hand shop, I figured it made up for it being less authentic. If you want one a little more exact, you could coat the handle in paper mache clay and shape it to your liking, then paint it black.

Now be honest, you hated that certain character for a long time, but when Bellatrix threw that knife at him, you suddenly felt bad for him, didn’t you? Come on, admit it, we all did.
