How to Add Eyelets to Fabric

In this tutorial I’ll show you how to add eyelets to fabric two different ways. The first method utilizes a pair of eyelet pliers. The second method shows how to add eyelets to fabric without the eyelet tool.

How to Add Eyelets to Fabric

MATERIALS USED:
Fabric
Eyelets
Eyelet pliers – Method 1
Hammer and a hard surface – Method 2
Eyelet base for hammer – Method 2

This is a skill that definitely comes in handy for cosplaying, as so many costumes require eyelets. I used to do them all by hand using the second method, with no eyelet tool. But I eventually bought a set of eyelet pliers and can honestly say it was probably the best $25 I ever spent.

The eyelet pliers make putting in the eyelets so much faster, and so much more accurate. With the by hand method, you end up using a hammer to pound in the eyelets. It’s painstakingly slow, and often times the eyelets shift while they’re being pounded. That sometimes ends up with eyelet holes that are crooked, or shrunk.

The pliers by contrast are so fast. They even cut the holes for you (which is great, because I no longer end up slicing my fingers cutting eyelet holes by hand). Then you just squeeze them, and the pliars do the rest, giving you perfectly set eyelets every time.

If you only add eyelets to a costume once in a blue moon, you’ll probably be fine with the cheaper alternative of adding eyelets to fabric with no pliers. But if you find you make a lot of costumes that require eyelets, I’d definitely recommend getting the pliers. Speaking from experience, it’ll making your cosplaying life so much more enjoyable!
