St. Brigid’s Cross is a traditional wheat weaving design. In this tutorial I’ll show you how to make it with 32 straws. This is a very easy wheat weaving to do, as each straw is only used once. So it’s a good one for beginners.

MATERIALS USED:
32 straws without heads
White thread
Scissors
Soaking dish
Ribbon

While I used 32 straws in my St. Brigid’s Cross, giving each leg 8 straws, you can use more or less depending on your personal preference. I’ve seen this cross made with as may as 11 straws in each leg, or as few as 4 in each leg. So depending on how you want your cross to look, you can use more or less accordingly.

Fun fact: Legend says that hanging a St. Brigid’s cross above or neat the door will protect the house from fire, sickness, and evil spirits. It was a common wedding gift for Irish mothers to give to their children, offering the newly married couple a symbol of protection for their new home and life together.
