This week’s tutorial is an autumn bittersweet wreath tutorial. These look beautiful hung for autumn or as decor for holidays such as Halloween and Thanksgiving.

MATERIALS USED:
Grapevine wreath hoop
22 gauge wreath wire
Scissors or hand pruners
Bittersweet branches
Autumn ribbon

I used one of my homemade grapevine wreath hoops in this bittersweet wreath tutorial. You can either make one as I did, or you can purchase a pre-made hoop from your local craft shop.

It’s best to use fresh cut bittersweet for your wreath, as it will be more vibrant and flexible to work with. You’ll want to avoid letting it get wet once it’s cut or it can start to appear a little dingy.

The berries of bittersweet are poisonous, so be sure pets and young children will not have access to your wreath.

Bittersweet In America

There are two kinds of bittersweet in the US, American bittersweet which is non-invasive, and Asian bittersweet. Asian bittersweet is invasive (particularly down south) and can strangle trees. In recent years people many people have been confusing the two.

Unfortunately this has led to the belief that all bittersweet is invasive, when in fact only the Asian bittersweet is. American bittersweet perfectly fine to have in your yard or hedgerow, so there is no need to kill it.

When making your bittersweet wreath, use American bittersweet. Or if you’re using Asian bittersweet, when the wreath is spent, dispose of it in a manner so that it won’t go to seed.
