DIY Striped Candles - Layered Candles, Rainbow Candles, Candy Cane Candles

In this week’s tutorial, I’ll be showing you how to make some DIY striped candles. These are a lot of fun because you can alter the stripe colors (and scents) for different seasons or holidays.

MATERIALS USED:
Candle wax (I used AAK’s sustainably grown soy Golden Wax)
A double boiler or two pans (one for water, one for wax)
Candy thermometer for temperature
Several fragrance essential oils
Multiple candle colorants
Stirring stick
Square braid wicking
Clear glass containers
Cardboard with slits or wick holders
Something to cover your floor or counters
Silicone dish
Something to prop candles on for diagonal stripes

If you want candles for Christmas, alternate red and white layers for a candy cane effect. For Halloween, use black and orange wax stripes. And if you want some for St. Patrick’s Day, Pride week, or just love bright colors, use them all to make rainbow candles like I did here!

The best part about layering multiple colors in the candles is that you can use a different scent for each layer. It gives you a very pleasant experience when burning the candle as each new layer unlocks a new world of scent.

To make DIY striped candles with crisp layers, wait until the previous layer of wax has cooled completely before adding in the next layer. If you prefer your layers to blend into each other a little more gradually, pour the next layer while the previous layer is still a bit warm, so the layers slightly melt into each other.

If you’ve never made hand poured candles before, or if you just want a refresher, check out the basics here to familiarize yourself with wicking methods and pouring temps, etc. And always be sure to use container blend wax. It will adhere to the sides of the glass better, so there won’t be unsightly air bubbles between the wax and the glass.
