7 Commonly Genetically Modified Foods

Genetically modified foodsWhile almost any food can unfortunately be genetically modified these days, there are some foods that are more likely than others to be genetically modified. Here are 7 of the most commonly genetically modified foods:

1.) Potatoes – Genetically modified potatoes are not any more pest or disease resistant than other potatoes. The only purpose for genetically modifying them was to fill the pockets of companies like Monsanto. McDonald’s is currently under fire as they decide whether or not to use genetically modified potatoes in their famous fries.

2.) Corn – The type of corn used to feed livestock is one of the most genetically modified foods on the planet. When we eat those animals, we are also ingesting the GMOs they have been fed.

3.) Tomatoes – In effort to produce a longer shelf life, tomatoes are often genetically modified with genes from completely different species.

4.) Milk – Most people have heard of the growth hormones rbgh and rbst that many cows are injected with to get them to produce more milk. Click here to read my earlier post about the dangers of rbst and the sly tricks Monsanto used to get it approved.

5.) Sweet corn – While genetically engineered “cow corn” has been around for many years, most sweet corn was GMO free until 2012. We have Monsanto to thank for corrupting that as well.

6.) Papayas – Almost 80% percent of papayas grown are genetically modified.

7.) Soybeans – Almost 100% of the soybeans grown in the United States and Argentina are genetically modified. Genetically modified soybeans were approved without restrictions in these two countries and no efforts are made to prevent them from cross-contaiminating non-GMO soybeans.

While there are certainly other genetically modified foods out there, these are some of the most commonly modified food. One of the best ways to avoid these foods is to shop local. Talk to your farmers about your concerns regarding genetically modified foods. If they they don’t grow genetically modified foods, they’re usually proud to say so.

If you can’t buy local, buy organic. Organic foods are regulated so that they must be GMO free. It’s possible that in the future Monsanto will get the regulations changed and weasel its products into organics as well, but at least for the time being organics are not genetically modified foods. You can also find non-genetically modified sweet corn at Whole foods and Trader Joe’s, both of which have banned GMO sweet corn from their stores.
