ExxonMobile CEO Against Fracking…

ExxonMobile CEO Against Fracking…at least when it’s in his own backyard.

In what must be the ultimate case of irony, ExxonMobil’s CEO Rex Tillerson has joined a lawsuit to prevent fracking near his home. Specifically Tillerson is hoping the block the construction of a 160-foot fracking water tower that would be built near his own million-dollar property. The reasons cited for wanting to block the fracking venture is that it will drop the property value in his area. Ironic, considering he thinks nothing of approving fracking projects in other people’s neighborhoods which will drop their property values.

As the CEO of ExxonMobil, Rex Tillerson is no stranger to fracking. Previously he has been an avid supporter of fracking, as ExxonMobil has been using the controversial practice for 60 years (or in environmental terms: “Polluting the groundwater since the 1950s”). Apparently he views it a little differently when it comes to his own town.

While the lawsuit itself is aimed not so much at fracking as at the water company who plans to build the tower, fracking is still mentioned as a concern in the lawsuit. The main concern being that the water will be sold to fracking companies, which will then lead to heavy trucks and noise nuisance. Coincidentally some of the same arguments people have made in other places about fracking.

Tillerson is concerned that the eyesore presented by the water tower will devalue his property, yet he thinks nothing of promoting fracking in other people’s areas where the large trucks, noise pollution, water pollution, and fracking waste devalue the property of people in those places. Bottom line is, Tillerson is fine with something that devalues other people’s property…until it ends up devaluing his. Perhaps he’s getting a little taste of karma.
