This technique is basically the same as the Ukrainian batik eggs, except that you use masking tape instead of hot wax to mask the eggs from the dye.

If you’re dying eggs with kids this Easter, masking tape is a much safer way to go than the traditional hot wax. It’s also a lot easier as you can just cut your masking tape into any shape without worrying about how fast the wax is flowing.

If you have brown eggs, they work very well with this technique, as the egg’s natural color looks beautiful when you remove the masking tape. You will have to leave your eggs in the dye a bit longer, however, as they don’t take to the dye quite as easily as white eggs. Once they do though, the colors actually come out richer than white eggs.
