GMO’s Don’t Work Anyway

GMO's Don't WorkAdvocates of GMO crops often try to tout their products as necessary by claiming that Round-up ready crops require less pesticides, however, what happens when the GMO’s don’t work?

When Monsanto first introduced their Bt corn, the idea was that farmers would able to apply less pesticide because the corn had been genetically modified to resist corn rootworms. In less than a decade, however, corn rootworms have begun developing a resistance to Monsanto’s genetically engineered corn. As such, farmers are finding themselves having to spray more pesticides on corn that was supposed to be engineered to repel the rootworms. It rather negates the supposed point of GMO’s in the first place.

If corn rootworms can become resistant to genetically modified corn, what’s to prevent other pests from becoming resistant to other GM crops intended to repel them as well? As they become resistant to batches of GM seeds, farmers will find themselves having a more difficult time with pests than when they used non-GMO crops. The GM resistant pests become “super pests” in the same way that diseases become anti-bacterial resistant “super bugs.”

Super pests require super doses of pesticides, which completely contradicts the supposed reasons the crops were genetically engineered in the first place. It certainly doesn’t give much credence to the argument that GMO crops are a necessity in modern farming. As an organic farmer myself, I can say that GMO crops are not a necessity. Sure it takes a little more work to do it the old-fashioned way, but it’s certainly not impossible. Maybe it’s time to just get back to real food.
