Candle Making: Chunk Candles Tutorial

In this week’s chunk candles tutorial, I’ll show you how to spice up basic container candle making with colorful contrasting pops of color.

Candle Making: Chunk Candles Tutorial

MATERIALS USED:
Candle wax (I used AAK’s sustainably grown soy Golden Wax)
A double boiler or two pans (one for water, one for wax)
Candy thermometer for temperature
Fragrance oil or essential oil
Coloring
Stirring stick
Square braid wicking
Containers
Cardboard with slits or wick holders
Something to cover your floor or counters
Silicone dish
Knife for cutting chunks

A fun twist on plain container candles, chunk candles are made by surrounding a wick or taper candle with colorful chunks of wax. The container is then filled with white or clear wax so the colorful chunks can be seen through it.

If you’ve never made hand poured candles before, check out the basics here to familiarize yourself with wicking methods and pouring temps, etc. It’s a good idea to attempt a few basic pours before moving onto the more creative projects like chunk candles.

You can fill your chunk candle with multicolored chunks for a wild array of color. Or keep the chunks down to a single color to make a dramatic two-tone candle.

Tip to Remember:
Always be sure you’re using container blend wax or your wax won’t adhere to your container and the effect will be lost.

If you want clear, easily discernible chunks, pour your wax on the lower end of the pouring temperature range to ensure it doesn’t melt the edges of your chunks. However, if you prefer a softer, more blended look, pour your wax on the higher end of the temperature range to help melt the color of the chunks into the rest of the candle.

The second method works especially well if you’re doing single color chunks with white pouring wax, as it gives it a somewhat marbled look. You can also spin the container a few times on a flat surface, once your wax had been poured, to pull out more of the color streams into the rest of the candle.
