Cosplay Wigs

Cosplay WigsCosplay wigs are very important elements of cosplay. A wig is often the costume accessory that can make or break a costume.

What would the Joker be without his green hair, Princess Leia without her cinnamon bun locks, Janice Rand without her basket-weave beehive, or Naruto without his spiky yellow mop? Short of dying, cutting, and styling one’s own hair (which can be nearly impossibly with some manga characters), a wig is the second best choice. Sometimes a great cosplay just isn’t completely without a great cosplay wig.

Wigs have definitely evolved as cosplay has gotten more popular. Where it was once difficult to find a wig in anything other than a natural color, these days they can be found in every color of the rainbow (and often multiple colors on the same wig for those bright anime cosplays). Many cosplay wigs also now come pre-styled like the hair of popular characters, which is particularly helpful for cosplaying manga characters, as many of their hair styles would be almost impossible to accomplish with real hair. Also sticking a sock up under a wig can give you an instant 60’s bouffant, no styling needed.

A really good wig will often cost more up front and may seem like a lot initially, but the trick Cosplay Wigsto keeping it inexpensive, is to find ways to use the same wig for multiple cosplays. The wig I used for my Wonder Woman costume above, is the same wig I style into buns for Princess Leia. My Spock wig doubles as Harry Potter hair. My Black Widow wig can also be used for Irisa, Phoenix, and Batgirl. When you divide the cost of a wig among multiple costume, suddenly it doesn’t seem like such a pricey investment, and a good quality wig will last you through many years of cosplaying.

While you can of course just use cheap, Halloween style wigs, you’ll find that you get what you pay for. Such wigs often look plastic, are rather thin, can’t be restyled well, and always look like they’ve been folded up in the package for too long (I’ll admit my Spock wig was cheap Halloween one, and it looks like it. I can never get it to stay the way I want it to. One of these days I’ll have to replace it with a good one). A good quality synthetic wig on the other hand can often pass for believably real hair and can hold it’s shape after you cut and style it the way you want it. Most good quality synthetic cosplay wigs can even tolerate heat tool styling these days, so you have complete control over your cosplay look. They also last much longer than cheap-quality wigs.

If you’re looking for some good quality wigs, check out Arda Wigs. They have a large selection of high-quality cosplay wigs in multiple styles and colors. They also have nice selection of cosplay makeup, so you have one-stop shopping.
