In this tutorial I’ll you show how to make part 1 of a DIY Isabela costume from the Dragon Age video games.

MATERIALS USED:
Dagger template (you can download free from my patterns vault here)
Thin cardboard (for the blades)
Corrugated cardboard (for the hilts)
Pencil
Scissors or utility knife
Chrome silver paint
Puffy paint (any color)
Metallic Gunmetal Gray paint
Paint brush
Metallic gold paint
Metallic copper marker
Hot glue gun

This part of the tutorial will be for Isabela’s daggers. The rest of the DIY Isabela costume will be posted over the next few weeks as I get it finished. I’ve never played the game, so I’m not sure which version this is from. But as far as I could tell from the pictures I Googled, her costume stayed fairly consistent between the different versions, with just minor changes here and there.

The blades and hilts are fairly easy to draw freehand, or I do have a free template in my patterns vault above. For the puffy paint on the blades you can use any color you have on hand. It will be covered by the silver paint later anyway, so it won’t matter what color it starts with.

Since the blades are made of cardboard, the porous texture tends to suck in any paint applied to it. A good way to combat this is to give the cardboard a coating of white school glue (Elmer’s glue) first. I didn’t do that on mine, but if I had the paint would have been much more shiny.
