This is a DIY Luke Skywalker costume tutorial for Lukeโ€™s x-wing pilot suit.

DIY Luke Skywalker Costume (x-wing pilot) Part 1: Chest Box

This is based on the Luke Skywalker costume flight suit version that he wears in A New Hope (smooth orange fabric, as opposed to the Empire Strikes Back version which has ridges on the sleeves, and a higher neck). This tutorial show how to make the first part, the chest box.

Most of it is made out of foam and cardboard, with a little painting here and there. If you have a hot glue gun, itโ€™s pretty easy to assemble.

The EVA foam that I used can be found in stores such as Lowes or the Home Depot. In the movie the sides of the chest box are kind of angled outward a bit, but I just simplified it and made them straight-edged.

Looking at images of the original prop, I would wager that the white circle at the top is simply a Hole Reinforcement Sticker for 3-holed ruled (lined) paper. These stickers were very common in the 70’s to reinforce and repair the 3 hole paper when putting in a 3-ring binder. Back then, some were lick and stick, though now you can still find them as stickers, such as Avery brand.
