Do It Yourself Pest Control: Aphids
If aphids are sucking the life out of your plants, try this homemade spray recipe for a little do it yourself pest control. Last year I posted a few of the natural methods we use to control aphids on our farm (read if here if you missed it) . We like to keep everything on our farm organic, so we don’t use any chemical sprays on our plants. Anything we use is natural or homemade. We have a few methods that work pretty well, but I’m always on the lookout for something new to try as well.
I recently read about a do it yourself pest control spray recipe for aphids from Estelle Bogoch-Stelmach. It’s a “spray” that would be safe enough to eat (though it probably wouldn’t taste very good). As such, it’s safe enough to spray plants with.
The do it yourself pest control recipe consists of:
1 sharp onion
3 cloves garlic
1 tbsp. hot sauce
Dash chili powder
Dash cayenne pepper
The skins are removed from the onion and garlic (be sure to add them to your compost pile). The ingredients are thrown in a blender and the blender is filled almost to the top with water. Then everything is blended together. The mixture is then strained and the resulting liquid is your do it yourself pest control spray.
To use, mix 2 parts of the spray to 1 part dish soap and dilute it with enough water to make it spray out easily. Pour the entire mixture in an old spray bottle and spray it directly onto the bugs. I’m guessing this would work for potato bugs before they get too large as well.
I’ll have to try it this year and see if it works any better than our usual do it yourself pest control spray of dish soap and canola oil. If anybody else tries it, let me know how it works.
