Easy Paper Mache Recipes

Paper mache can be made with either glue or flour. Once made you can use it to construct a variety of creative projects. Here are a couple very easy paper mache recipes that I’ve used many times to make crafts and cosplay projects.

Easy Paper Mache RecipesThe Flour Recipe

The nice thing about the flour recipe is that it’s non-toxic, so it’s a good one to use if you’re crafting with kids. The recipe for flour-based paper mache is as follows:

  • 1 part flour (1/2 cup is a good measurement)
  • 4 parts cold water (2 cups)
  • 4 parts boiling water (2 cups)
  • 1 tablespoon of salt or sugar per 1/2 cup of flour (this helps prevent the paste from molding)

Easy Paper Mache RecipesBring two parts of your water to a boil. While that’s heating up, mix the 1 part flour and 1 part cold water together. (It will try to separate, so you’ll have to keep mixing). When your other water is boiling, pour your cold water / flour mixture into the boiling water. Stir it well and let it return to a boil. Once it returns to a boil, remove it from the heat.

Then stir in the salt or sugar and let it cool. The mixture will thicken into a gooey paste as it cools. Just perfect for all your crafting projects. Store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.

The Glue Recipe

While not quite as family-friendly as the flour recipe, the glue recipe is even easier to make. And you don’t have to worry about it molding as the flour recipe can sometimes do. To make this recipe, simply mix 1 part water to 2 parts glue. If the water and glue separate after setting for a bit, just give the bowl a stir to mix them together again.
