(Evil Captain Kirk) DIY Mirror Universe Star Trek Tunic
In this tutorial I’ll show you how to make an easy DIY evil Captain Kirk tunic from the Mirror Mirror episode.
MATERIALS USED:
1 yard of gold fabric – you may need more depending on your size
2 feet of gold fringe
Gold sash fabric long enough to go around your waist and hang down to your knees
Snaps, (or a zipper, or velcro) for front closure
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Needle and gold thread
1 sheet of cardstock
Scrap pieces of cardboard
Paint: (I used Country Red, Cadmium yellow, Tangelo Orange, Titanium White, Bittersweet Orange)
Metallic gold puffy paint
Scrap piece of silver or gold trim
Wavy edged decorative shears
Sticky backed velcro for attaching awards to finished tunic
I had several requests for this, and Mirror Mirror is one of my favorite Star Trek TOS episodes, so I had a lot of fun with this. (Spoiler alert, if you watch long enough, you’ll see evil Kirk moonwalking…)
Per usual I ended up making the Empire insignia and the awards for the evil Captain Kirk tunic too big. (When I’m drawing them out, I have a tendency to always over estimate the size of everything). So you’ll probably want to make them a bit smaller on yours.
The two types of gold fabric and and fringe I used here I found in JoAnn Fabrics (I have direct links to the ones I used above). I used a yard of material for the tunic, but you may need more depending on your size.
The fit of this tunic is meant for a man’s body, so if you’re a female cosplayer, you’ll have to make a few adjustments. I’m pretty flat-chested so I was able to get away with just constructing mine the same way Kirk’s was constructed. But if you’re a busty girl, you’ll want to put in a few darts leading up to the chest area, otherwise it probably won’t fit right.
Hope you have as much fun with this evil Captain Kirk tunic as I did, and leave me a comment below and let me where Mirror Mirror ranks in your favorite episodes list. Live long and prosper fellow trekkies!

Incredible. Do you make these for others or just yourself and closest Elf folk clan?
Thanks π I mostly do these for myself and my Elf folk clan (love that by the way, haha), but occasionally I also do them for other people when I get orders, depending on the time of the year.
