GMO Apples Coming to a Stand Near You

GMO applesWell they’ve done it again. They’ve taken yet another healthy food and defiled it in the name of “progress.” This time it’s GMO apples coming to a stand near you.

As if we already didn’t have enough genetically engineered foods to try and keep off our plates (read my previous post about the most common GMO foods here), the FDA has just gone ahead and approved the first GMO apples. The new GMO apples are Arctic Granny Smith and Arctic Golden Delicious. They don’t even have a decent excuse this time.

GMO apples haven’t been altered for something like longer shelf life or increased yields. No, this time the apples have been altered at the cellular level to correct something as trivial as browning. Guess the scientists have never of the old lemon juice trick. If you rub lemon juice on the cut part of an apple, it prevents it from turning brown. NO genetic tampering necessary!

It’s not even the genetic engineering of the apple that bothers me as much as the fact that we’re not given a choice. Most states do not yet have mandatory GMO labeling. It’s ridiculous that we are not given the transparency to make a choice about whether we want to eat GMO foods.

Every other ingredient in food has to be labeled, right down to the preservatives, yet GMO foods have free reign. They don’t have to be labeled. Why? Because companies like Monsanto spend millions of dollars to ensure that GMO food labeling campaigns are blocked. So I have to ask, if GMO’s are so safe, then why are the companies who create them so intent on preventing them from being labeled?

Just one more reason to eat organic, as organic foods are not currently allowed to contain genetically modified varieties.
