Go Green, Save Green: Reusuable Containers.

go green save greenReduce, reuse, recycle isn’t just a trendy catchphrase, it’s a way of living. Going green doesn’t have to be expensive, in fact there are little ways of going green that can actually save you money. You can save green, by going green.

Every year in America, people throw away 25 billion foam cups (according to the EPA). Most of these come from purchases of coffee or tea. These cups will still be in our landfills 500 years from now.

Instead of contributing to that number, consider making your own coffee or tea at home and bringing it to work with you in a thermos. (Many thermoses are insulated and will keep your beverage warm for the entire duration of your workday). This not only saves on foam cups, but it also saves you money and possibly even time (as a thermos full of coffee will last a lot longer than a single foam cup).

Lunch is also a great place to go green. Like your beverages, lunches are cheaper when made at home and so much greener. Instead of getting a bought lunch and all the wasteful packaging that goes along with it, make your own lunch at home and bring it to work in reusable containers. (Old Cool Whip and cottage cheese tubs are great for transporting lunches.)

You can even change your water habits. Fill a reusable water bottle from home and bring it with you instead of buying bottled water when you’re out. It’s cheaper and keeps plastic water bottles out of landfills.

Even tiny things like these can have a big impact on keeping our planet a beautiful place to live. Or as Galadriel told Frodo “Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.” After all, who wants a landfill in their backyard? The easiest way to prevent that is to simply make less trash.

What small steps are you taking to make the world a greener place, and have you found it saving you some green as well?
