How to Cook a Squash
People at the stand often ask us how to cook a squash. There are several ways, but the easiest method is also one of the tastiest.
The method we use most often at my house to cook a squash is the “halving” method. The halving method is definitely the simplest method for how to cook a squash. It works best for butternut, buttercup, acorn, and delicata squash.
All you do is cut a squash in half, scoop out the seeds, and put a little butter and brown sugar in the center. Then just throw it in the oven on 350 for about an hour (or a few minutes in the microwave if you prefer) and it’s ready to eat right out of the shell. No peeling or cutting necessary.
The other method we commonly use is a bit more work, but is still very tasty. It involves peeling the squash, cutting it into chunks and cooking it down until it’s the texture of applesauce. This method usually makes a good Thanksgiving dish. Just don’t forget a dash of brown sugar as it really brings out the flavor of the squash.
And while you’re cooking the squash, don’t forget to roast the seeds as well!
