How To Do A Blanket Stitch

In this tutorial I’ll show you how to do a blanket stitch; it’s a very easy stitch to learn and a lot of fun to use.

How to do a blanket stitch

You’ll need a needle and thread, and of course the fabric you intend to blanket stitch. You might want to use a scrap piece of fabric the first time until you get the hang of it.

Once you learn how to do a blanket stitch, you can use it for many applications.

The Blanket Stitch Is both Decorative And Practical

The blanket stitch is commonly used to decorate the edges of clothing or blankets (which is probably why it’s called a blanket stitch πŸ˜‰).

Many quilters use it for applique as well, which I’ll show you in this tutorial. It has a two-fold purpose there. First, it keeps the edges of the applique folded under so they won’t fray. And second, it gives the edges an artistic finish.

Another use that I frequently take advantage of is using a blanket stitch to seal the edges of something you’ve sewn by hand. On a sewing machine you can generally just zigzag stitch over the edges to keep them from fraying. But if you’re not using a machine, blanket stitching the seams will have the same effect, and prevent the edges from fraying.

If you want your blanket stitch to really pop, use thread that is in a high contrasting color with your fabric. And use thicker thread as well, because thicker thread show up more.
