How To Make a Pillowcase

In this tutorial I’ll show you how to make a pillowcase. The nice thing about making your own pillowcase is that you can customize it however you want.

How to make a pillowcase

MATERIALS USED:
Fabric – I used 1 yard
Scissors
Measuring tape
Sewing pins
Pillow measurements
Sewing machine or needle and thread

Buying a pillowcase is obviously the easiest way to obtain one, but store bought pillowcases don’t always offer the fabric options you want. Especially when you get into the larger or odd-sized pillowcases. If you make a pillowcase for your pillow, you can choose any fabric print and type you want. Also sometimes you find you have a spare yard of fabric lying around that you’re not sure what to do with yet (or is that just me? πŸ˜‰ ) and turning it into a pillowcase is a great way to use it up.

I get very warm at night when I sleep, so I chose to make a pillowcase out of some silky fabric that would help keep my head cooler on hot summer nights. As you’ll see in the tutorial, the dimensions of your pillowcase will be enlarged from your pillow. In my case, my pillow was 20×30, so the finished pillowcase was 21×34.

You can make a pillowcase with a sewing machine or by hand sewing if you don’t have a machine. If you need to learn how to hand sew, click here to check out my easy hand sewing tutorial.
