How to Make Bracers Without Leather – DIY Medieval Costume / Celtic Warrior Cosplay
In this week’s tutorial I’ll show you how to make bracers with a little interfacing and some distressed fabric for a very convincing leather look.
MATERIALS USED:
Medieval Bracers Template (available free in my patterns vault)
1 foot of brown distressed fabric
1 foot of stiff interfacing
2 Buckles
Awl
Scissors
Needle and thread or sewing machine
This video is a small part of the full Celtic Warrior costume tutorial from my new book: Cosplaying When You’re Broke (available on Amazon or Smashwords or wherever books are sold), which shows how to make awesome costumes without breaking the bank.
While the leather on these DIY bracers is entirely fake, it looks very authentic. When I wore this costume to the Renaissance festival a few years ago, people though it was real leather.
The distressed fabric gives it the look, and the interfacing gives it the body to make it convincing. I used straps to fasten my bracers, but lacing would also be fitting alternative.
The finished bracers can be used for many different costumes. They work great for any Medieval or fantasy era costumes, such as Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, etc.
I used them to complete my Celtic Warrior costume. The Celtic Warrior woman is the one original character in my book. It’s definitely not a historically accurate costume, haha, but I wanted to do it in more of a fictional, comic book style way.
Make An Impression
If you ever want to make a lasting impression on one of your sister’s friends, being dressed like this the first time they meet you will make sure they never forget you π
Several years ago my brother and I decided to go the Renaissance festival dressed as Celtic Warriors. The night before we went, my sister had a few friends sleeping over. So when everyone woke up the next morning, my brother and I were already dressed for the festival.
One of my sister’s friends, who had never met me before, came around the corner to find me dressed like this. Full Celtic Warrior costume and I’d even done some “warpaint” with blackberry juice.
Needless to say, it wasn’t what he’d been expecting to find the first time he met his friend’s sister at 7AM. It had such an effect on him that ever since then he has referred to me as “Xena.” π
