Sauron Costume Part 1: How to Make Sauron’s Mace

You can make a fairly convincing Sauron’s mace using old wrapping paper tubes, some clay, and a little bit of spotty painting.

Sauron's Mace

Sauron’s mace can be seen in the Moon Doom battle scenes in the Lord of the Rings movies; the part where Sauron still has a physical body. My cousin has his heart set on being Sauron at the comic con this year, so I started with Sauron’s mace, as it’s probably the easiest part of the costume.

The drawback of my version of Sauron’s mace is that it’s a little bit fragile at the top, since it’s just surround by clay and hot glue. So swinging it into a crowd of elves and men at the base of mount doom will be a no-no with this Sauron’s mace. The clay I found at JoAnn fabrics. It was called Plus clay, but if I did it again, I’d probably just use FIMO. Click here for the pdf template for the mace head pieces.
