How To Oil A Sewing Machine
In this tutorial I’ll show you how to oil a sewing machine.
It’s important to oil your sewing machine based on your usage. If you use your machine frequently, you’ll want to oil it frequently as well. A good guide is if you’re someone who sews every day, you’ll probably want to oil your machine 2 or 3 times a month. But if you only use it once or twice month, then you can probably get by oiling it once every few months.
Some machines don’t need to be oiled at all, but most of the older machines do. And many of the newer ones still require oiling as well.
The machine I use in this tutorial is an old Nelco, so it may be a bit different than yours if you have a newer machine, but should give you general idea. If you still have your machine’s user manual, it will show the exact points to oil for your specific machine, but if not, you can just use the “common sense” oiling method. Basically you want to oil all the moving parts (but not the actual engine).
And most important, once you oil your sewing machine, you’ll want to sew a few lines of stitches onto some scrap fabric. This will catch any excess oil that might be oozing off the freshly-oiled parts. Otherwise you might end up getting sewing machine oil on the next piece of pretty fabric you try to sew.
