Natural Makeup: Homemade Black Eyeshadow
So following last week’s post about my Maleficent lipstick, this week is my recipe for the other half of the Maleficent makeup, the homemade black eyeshadow I used.
When I first did my Spock eyebrows, I used some black mineral eyeshadow, and while it was cruelty free, and fairly absent of noxious chemicals, there were still a few questionable ingredients in the eyeshadow. So when it came time to do my Maleficent eyes (which would mean a much larger dose of eyeshadow than my Spock eyebrows had) I decided to do a little experimenting to see what I could find as a more natural alternative, and if it was even possible to make homemade black eyeshadow. The answer was activated charcoal.
Activated charcoal is a substance often used for upset stomachs, teeth whitening, and skin exfoliation. Activated charcoal is not the same stuff you heat your grill with. It’s a powder made by heating coconut husks at very high temperatures to create char. The char is then “activated” with very high temperature steam and further processed. The end result is fine, black powder.
I figured if it could be used for a skin exfoliating mask, why not some homemade black eyeshadow? After doing a bit more research on it, I decided to give eyeshadow a go. I got some activated charcoal off Amazon.com (When purchasing activated charcoal, you want to make sure that it’s coconut activated charcoal, as that will be made from coconut husks, a renewable resource. Steer clean of “hardwood” charcoal, as a lot of hardwood charcoal contributes to illegal deforestation in other countries).
To use the activated charcoal, put a pinch or two into a small container and add a few drops of jojoba oil. You can also use water if you don’t have any jojoba oil on hand, but the jojoba oil makes it slide on a little smoother than plain water. (Alternative oils to jojoba are sweet almond oil, or your favorite essential oil, which is a cool way to give your eyeshadow scent if you desire). Mix the activated charcoal and water/oil together, adding more water/oil as desired until it has the consistency you like for eyeshadow. Then just apply it like you would your normal eyeshadow.
And so here is a picture of my Maleficent eyes after painting them with my homemade black eyeshadow (and yes, like the lipstick, it’s a bit sloppy, but again, it was my first time, so that’s an unpracticed hand applying it).
