This video is a small part of the full DIY Raven costume tutorial from my new book: Cosplaying When You’re Broke (available on Amazon or Smashwords or wherever books are sold), which shows how to make awesome costumes without breaking the bank.

This Raven belt is quick and easy to make. Anytime I wear it out somewhere, everyone thinks it’s real metal until I flip it over and show them it’s just cardboard.

For the birds on this belt, I cut them out of craft foam. It’s flexible which makes it easier to cut out the small details. However, you can also use 2 thicknesses of cardboard if you prefer; it’s just a bit more difficult to cut out.

The full DIY Raven costume cost me $40 to make, but this belt part of it only cost about $2. The foil and craft foam were the only items I purchased, and the small pieces I used on this belt came out to around $2 in cost.

The cardboard I used was free, the beads were given to me by a relative, the gold paint came from a relative, the yarn was an end of skein scrap, and the plastic gems were from a bulk assortment I’d purchased years ago and have used for many costumes.

Favorite Superheros

Everyone has their favorite superhero, their go-to character when someone asks who’s their best-loved. For me that character has always been Raven, maybe in part because her darkness makes her such a complex character. She doesn’t choose to be evil, but she knows that it can sometimes overtake her if she doesn’t keep it in check.

My dream film would be for DC to make a Raven movie that separates her from the Titans. Half of the Titans kind of just joined the team essentially for fun. Whereas Raven has always had to deal with some very grown up problems due to her half demon blood.

So I’d love to see DC make a movie with just Raven, delving into her back history, and her return to Earth from Azarath. But I may have to wait a while for that, as it seems she’s inevitably wrapped up with the Titans for now, haha.
