Savage Opress Lightsaber DIY – Cheap and Easy Cardboard
This week’s tutorial is the Savage Opress lightsaber DIY. This one is a pretty quick and easy lightsaber to assemble, so if you’ve never made a lightsaber before, this is a good one to start with.
MATERIALS USED:
Savage Opress Lightsaber Template (available free in my patterns vault)
2 cardboard tubes, one that can fit inside the other (the inner tube should be about 15 inches long, and outer tube about 10 inches long)
Silver adhesive foil
2mm black craft foam
Black Metallic paint
Multi surface glue
Cardstock scraps
Cardboard scraps
Scissors (Duct tape scissors work well for cutting sticky foil)
Utility knife
Ruler
Pencil
Paint brush
Red and silver plastic beads in 2 sizes
This is a nice cheap built, as it uses cardboard and craft foam as the base, like most of my lightsabers. Also like most of my lightsabers, I achieve the metal look with silver adhesive foil.
While I like the convenience of the pre-sticky adhesive foil, you can also just glue on tinfoil as an alternative. However, tinfoil does have a tendency to crease more easily, so you’ll have to be a bit more careful when working with it. As another alternative, you could also just use silver paint and forego foil altogether.
For the red and silver beads, I just used what I had on hand, since I was running very late getting this tutorial done. But they would have looked nicer had I painted them, particularly the silver beads, to match the silver of the saber. So if you want yours to look more authentic, you can always just paint the beads.
