Sugar Flowers Recipe
Sugar flowers add a beautiful touch to any summer cake, and while they look extravagant, it’s very easy to make sugar flowers.
Begin your sugar flowers by getting some real flower heads. You’ll want to be sure that the flowers you’re using are edible. Pansies, violets, daylilies, honeysuckle and clover are all edible flowers that look lovely when sugared. You can also check a field guide to find more edible flowers.
Decide if you’re going to sugar the entire flower head or just individual petals. Both options make beautiful cake decor. If you’ve opted for single petal sugar flowers, pull the petals apart now.
Beat up an egg white (or use powdered egg whites if you don’t know whether the eggs are safe from salmonella) and get yourself a small paint brush. Use the paint brush to gently brush the egg white over both sides of the entire flower, then carefully sprinkle it with sugar. Leave the flowers to dry.
Once dry, you can use the sugar flowers to decorate cakes or cupcakes. And because you used edible flowers, the sugar flowers can be eaten along with the rest of the cake.
