The Power of Color

The Power of ColorColor is not just something to make the world prettier, it can actually be used to alter mood or physical health. Using the power of color, is something almost all of us do, whether consciously or unconsciously. When we paint our walls, choose our carpets, and other things around the house, we may be choosing the colors of these items because subconsciously, we may be lacking enough of that particular color. By filling our surroundings with a specific color, we fill the vacancy of that color. We even subconsciously fill our color needs when we choose our clothing or eat colored foods.

People have known about the power of color for thousands of years. The Ancient Egyptians often used colored minerals, stones, crystals, salves, and dyes for color healing. They also painted the walls of their medical rooms different colors depending on what ailments were treated in each room.

In more recent times, the power of color has undergone research and been found to have tangible results. A man by the name of Dr. Harry Wohlfarth, an art professor at the University of Alberta at Edmonton, did some studies with color therapy and he found that colors can be predicted to have certain effects on the nervous system of people. In many experiments he found that under yellow, orange, and red lights, blood pressure, pulse, and
respiration rates increased. However, these rates were found to decrease under black, blue, and green light.

In the early 1960’s a time-lapse photographer named Dr. John Ott, was hired by Walt Disney to film the growth and blooming of plants. During this film time, Dr. Ott found that the color of light the plants were exposed to seemed to have effects on the plants’ growth. Dr. Ott later performed some experiments with colored greenhouse glass to show effects on plants growing in the green house. Plants grew at a faster rate under red glass, but in the long run they were stunted. Whereas, the plants grown under green or blue glass were slower growing, but were more robust plants in the long run.

It was reported to the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1990, that things such as addictions, eating disorders, impotence, and depression had been successfully treated with blue light. In 1993, British opticians could use a device called the Intuitive Colorimeter to determine if the power of color could be used for people with reading problems. Colored lens eyeglasses, especially bright pink, yellow, green, and blue, have been found to help people with reading disorders such as dyslexia.

The power of color is a very real way to alter your mood and health. So next time you burn a candle or lay out your clothes for the day, ask yourself: “What color do I need today?”
