Thena – DIY Thena Costume part 2: Headband and Armor
You can make a cheap and easy headband and set of armor for a DIY Thena costume with a little craft foam and some hot glue.
MATERIALS USED:
Thena costume patterns (available free in my patterns vault)
Pellon or craft foam (both can be found at JoAnn Fabrics)
Gold fabric (I used the rest of the gold jacket)
Scissors
Pencil
Hot glue gun (or other glue)
White elastic
Stretchy cord
Awl (I used the sharp end of compass)
Gold Metallic paint
Paint brush
This is the second part of my DIY Thena costume tutorial (if you missed the first part, you can check it out here). And the third part, the golden weapon, will be coming up in a few weeks.
I used Pellon for the shoulder armor, and craft foam for the rest of the armor. You can just use foam for all the armor if you prefer, but I liked the added stiffness of the Pellon for the shoulder armor.
The gold fabric is the rest of the second hand jacket I’d cut apart for the first installment of the DIY Thena costume. But as an alternative, you could also just paint the foam gold.
If you go the foam route, I would recommend sealing the foam with glue before you paint it. I didn’t seal the foam I used for the headband, as I was worried it wouldn’t be flexible enough if I did. However, for armor, the stiffness will be fine, and sealing the foam with glue will make the paint show up better.
On the shoulder armor pieces, I didn’t put on the second piece of elastic, but I think I will before I wear the costume out anywhere. So I would recommend putting a second piece on the lower end of your shoulder armor as well. It’ll help keep it from sliding so much.
