Witcher: How To Make A Sword From Cardboard for a Witcher Costume
In this tutorial, I’ll show you exactly how to make a sword from cardboard that is cheap and easy, and looks quite realistic.
MATERIALS USED:
Witcher sword template (available free in my patterns vault)
Corrugated cardboard
Stiffer cardboard
5 sheets of cardstock
Silver puffy paint
Silver paint
3 feet of silver foil
Paint brush
Scissors/utility knife
Pencil
Multi-surface glue
Expired, non-breakable (mercury-free) lightbulb or something similar shaped
Scrap of gold foil
Plastic container top
Random beads and buttons
Gold paint
Blue, red, and green plastic gems
Scraps of black fabric
This video is a small part of the full Witcher costume tutorial from my new book: Cosplaying When You’re Broke (available on Amazon or Smashwords or wherever books are sold), which shows how to make awesome costumes without breaking the bank.
I used silver adhesive foil for my sword, as it saves time not having to glue the foil in place, but you can also just glue on aluminum foil if you prefer. Also I used tape to hold my sword edges in place while the glue was drying, but I should have removed it before putting the silver on the blade because the shape of the tape underneath can still be seen.
While the sword was made of meteorite in the series (which Cavill exuberantly explained in a behind the scenes video π), this one is just made of cardboard. So while it isn’t strong enough to do any battling with, it is strong enough look pretty cool swinging it through the air.
And if The Witcher isn’t your thing, you can always use this technique to make a cool sword for a different character of your choosing.
