Rey Costume Tutorial – Cheap and Easy DIY

In this tutorial I’ll show you how simple it is to make a DIY Rey costume from Star Wars.

Cheap And Easy DIY Rey Costume - Star Wars

MATERIALS USED:
A yard and 1/2 of off white fabric (will depend on your height and fabric width as well)
Scissors
Sewing machine or needle and thread
Sticky backed velcro
Fake leather/distressed fabric
Off-white shirt and pants (found mine in a 2nd hand shop for a few dollars)
Two belts
Brown pouch (I used a binoculars case)

I kind of combined the Force Awakens and the Rise of Skywalker costumes (what I’ve seen thus far in the trailers anyway). I liked the simplicity of the Force awakens costume (no hood), but I like the shorter arm wraps of the Rise of Skywalker version. So this DIY Rey costume cross between the two. If you want to be more specific to either of the movies, you can do so easily enough with just a tweak or two.

There are two things l love about this costume. First, it’s super comfy, which isn’t always the case with costumes. (In fact some of them are downright irritating to wear πŸ˜‰ ). And the other thing I love about it is that it’s so super easy to make. I completed construction of this one in just one evening.

Hemp Fabric

For this costume, I ended up using some hemp fabric. I had some lying around for a couple years that I’d planned to make some clothes from, but I never really got around to it. Since I’ve been trying to use up stuff I already have, and it was a good color and texture for a DIY Rey costume, I decided to use it up on this. Kind of adds a fun eco-friendly touch to it.

I chose to leave the ends of my fabric shaggy on purpose. The Rey costume in the movie had fairly neat ends, but I took a little artistic liberty there, because it seemed to me that people on Jakku would have shaggy fabric ends.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

For the pouch I used a binoculars case I already had. It’s not an exact match, but I do love to use items I already have. It saves time, money, and storage space. And it’s more eco-friendly because I’m not buying something new.

I didn’t end up doing the shoes for this costume as I haven’t found a pair that looked enough like them. But I check 2nd hand shops frequently, and I’ll locate a pair before I actually wear this Rey costume out anywhere. But for now, it’s shoesless πŸ˜‰
