DIY Alice In Wonderland Inspired Whimsical Cupboard

In this tutorial I’ll show how I took some cupboards someone had discarded and transformed their rather unattractive colors into a fun whimsical little decor piece. I call it Alice In Wonderland inspired, but I think it also hints at Beetlejuice (and maybe maybe a tad Mackenzie Childs as well).

MATERIALS USED:
Cupboard
Painters tape
Foam brush
Red, black, and white paint
Varnish
Old calendar pictures
Power-tac

The secret to the checkerboard design is two separate applications of painter’s tape and alternating coats of paint. Just test your paints ahead of time. I found out the hard way that some types of paint don’t like to layer over each other and had the bottom color bleed through the top. It ended up ruining the whole thing, so I had to take off all the painter’s tape and start again. (Very time consuming, and not exactly fun to do that many times in a row).

I used a deep red base as my background for the checked pattern. It really made the black and white pop. But you can use any color you desire that might fit with your decor. (My red matched well with the Serenity poster I have hanging on the wall beside it πŸ˜‰ )

Don’t forget about the inside of the cupboard either. Just because you don’t see it from the outside, doesn’t mean the inside needs to be blah. Jazz it up with some old favorite calendar pictures. I used some from an old folk angel calendars that included cute images with happy sayings. They spread a little bit of joy every time the cupboard is opened.
