Bellatrix Part 1: The Dress – How to Make a Bellatrix Lestrange Costume
If you’re feeling deliciously “evil” this week and wondering how to make a Bellatrix Lestrange costume to show it, this tutorial will get you started.
MATERIALS USED:
A black, long sleeved dress
Scissors
Metallic silver puffy paint
7 yards of black cording (found in Joann Fabrics)
Eyelet Pliers
50 Silver eyelets
In this video I’ll show you how to make a Bellatrix Lestrange dress. This tutorial is just for the dress, but be sure to check back next week for the corset tutorial to finish it off. While this dress looks rather detailed and intricate, it’s actually rather simple to make. The hardest part is the silver detailing with the puffy paint, but after a few practice runs on some scrap fabric, you should get the hang of it, and make it fairly easy to finish.
This costume is also fairly inexpensive to make if you get your base dress from a second-hand shop (it’s more ecofriendly too). I was able to make my Bellatrix dress for just under $10. Granted, I did already have the puffy paint on hand, so that would be a few bucks more. And I did finally splurge the $15 on a set of eyelet pliers (Oh happy dance! No more hammering eyelets in one by one!), but I’m not counting the pliers in the price, because I’ll be using them for a ton of other projects as well, so they’re not specific to this Bellatrix Lestrange costume.
I’d had several requests from followers asking me to do a tutorial for how to make a Bellatrix Lestrange costume, and since Halloween was not too long ago, I just finished rewatching the entire Harry Potter series. And in my family we’re big Harry Potter fans, probably to a dangerous extent… π so I was more than happy that I got to this request on my list while I was still on my Halloween Potter high (not that it ever really wears off π )
Bellatrix did kill my favorite Harry Potter character (R.I.P. You know who you are. Sad tears. Screaming in anguish.), but I will admit, she’s still one of my favorite villains. She just such a deliciously crazy-evil character that it makes her so much fun to cosplay. And as much as we like heroes, we have to admit, we still love our villains. Am I right?
Hope you enjoy this tutorial, and leave me a comment below letting me know who your favorite character from the Potterverse is.
