Daenerys Part 1 – How to Make a Daenerys Costume

So just in time for the return of Game of Thrones, here’s a tutorial for how to make a Daenerys costume.

How to Make a Daenerys Costume Part 1

MATERIALS USED:
1 yard of brown alova (found in JoAnn Fabrics)
7 inches of the lighter colored alova
Dark brown food coloring and spray bottle
Cardboard
Scissors
Metallic copper paint
Metallic bronze paint
Paintbush
Brown ribbon (or bias tape)
Chartreuse green trim (long enough to tie around your waist)
Hot glue gun
9 inches of distressed brown fabric (found in JoAnn’s)
8 inches of felt (to give weight to the distressed fabric)
Sewing machine or needle and thread

Had several requests for a Daenerys costume. Dany’s got so many outfits to choose from, but I figured the Dothraki outfit is one of her most iconic since she wore it for so long, so here’s the first part of that. I had to alter it a bit, since I couldn’t find any material that matched what she had, so I just kinda stuck to anything that somewhat resembled leather, and it seemed to work fairly well.

Her top and the center stripe of her skirt looks like it was actually woven reeds or straw. I couldn’t find anything even remote close to that. So I just went with some brown distressed fabric (since I stockpile the stuff like it’s going out of style and already had plenty to work with). With a little felt inside to give it weight, it passes well for leather. But since it’s actually polyester, it totally machine washable.

Her skirt itself was actually more of a greenish-gray, but I couldn’t find any alova in that color, so I went with brown. The great thing about alova is that it looks like leather, and because of its weight, it drapes similarly. Plus the edges never fray, so that makes it awesome to work with. Especially if you want raw edges for a costume like this.

And at some point in the future, I’ll have to do that deep blue dress she wore for so long while freeing slaves. I think that one’s my favorite of all her outfits. What’s your favorite Daenerys costume so far? Let me know in the comments below.
