A hidden litter box is best used for single cats. If you have multiple cats, they generally don’t prefer enclosed litter boxes as they can’t see who is lying in wait for them outside of it.

I recently ended up with another feral cat who begged its way inside on a rainy day. (Yes, I’m easy to bribe with a cute face and little meow ?), so we ended up with Jackpot as the newest addition to the family.

While I absolutely love my kitties, the mess left by the scattered litter is something I’m not a huge fan of. So when Jackpot joined the family, I decided to come up with a solution to the litter mess.

Since Jackpot was not being kept in the same area as my other cats, she had her own litter box. So the enclosed, less mess litter box worked very nicely for her, as she didn’t have to worry about any surprise attacks from the other cats.

I designed an enclosed litter box with space around it. It both keeps the cat from throwing litter out of the box, and it collects a lot of the litter on its paws after it exits the box so it’s not tracking it all over the place. Of course I also put in plenty of vent space, so the enclosed litter box wouldn’t get too funky for the cat to use.

In addition to quelling the excess litter mess, I also found this helped a lot with the smell. And it’s also much nicer to look at than an ugly litter box. I ended up putting mine near the window sill with a cushion on top of it. Jackpot loved to sit on top of it and watch the birds out the window.

Another option to catch even more litter, would be to put a little piece of carpet in the entrance of the litter box. Just empty it off every couple days to ensure its litter-catching properties remain top-notch.
