How to Make Hidden Sliding Shelves

In this tutorial I’ll show you how I made two hidden sliding shelves. They both pop out of different sides of a single cupboard as a space-saving solution.

How to Make Hidden Sliding Shelves

MATERIALS USED:
Shelf # 1:
Two cupboards that stack on top of each other
Two boards (slightly higher than your shelf)
Shelf
Wood glue
2 pallet wood slats (or something similar)
Screws
Driver drill or screwdriver
Cupboard handle
Scrap pieces of felt
Circular saw

Shelf # 2:
2 heavy-duty drawer slides
Shelf thick enough to attach to drawer slides
Screws
Driver drill or screwdriver
2 pieces of pallet wood
Circular saw
4 shelf brackets

If you happen to have a small place, or just find you don’t need all of your counter space all the time, this is a great way to have your counter and your room too. The first shelf is almost completely hidden by stacked cupboards. It sits just waiting to be pulled out any time you need a little extra countertop for food preparation or entertaining. And because the shelf is open beneath it, you could also pull up a chair use it as pop-up work desk.

The second shelf isn’t quite as space saving, but does allow for easy access of the shelf’s entire contents. (No more finding that item that’s passed its expiration date because you never saw it in the back of the cupboard). In my case, I use it to house my solar-powered mini-fridge, which allows me to keep it out of sight and out of mind. And then I can simply slide out the shelf and pop the top when I need to get into the fridge.

Which sliding shelf do you like best?
