DIY Natural Eye Makeup: Blackberry Eyeliner
Here’s a recipe for some DIY natural eye makeup, a simple blackberry eyeliner that only requires 2 ingredients and a bit of time.
I’m not much of a makeup person. My first time wearing makeup was for my Spock eyebrows, and it took me a while to find makeup I was willing to use for it. As 100% organic natural eye makeup was a little out of my price range, I settled on some E.L.F. makeup because it was cruelty-free and, for the most part, paraben-free. Even so, it still contained ingredients I couldn’t pronounce and I knew that if I was putting it on my skin, it would eventually end up in my body. I didn’t particularly like the idea of that, even if the only time I wear makeup is for a costume once in a blue moon. So I decided next time a costume called for makeup, I’d be using some homemade natural eye makeup.
Over Christmas, when it came time to put on my elf costume, I wanted to line my eyes with swirls for a whimsical elvish effect. So sticking to my decision to use natural eye makeup, I made myself a blackberry eyeliner which worked wonderfully.
To make this eyeliner you’ll need a handful of wild blackberries (often called black caps, or black raspberries). Get a small bottle with a rubber dropper and start mashing the blackberries into the bottle. For every ten blackberries you put in, add a blueberry into the mash. When the berries are thoroughly mixed and mashed, screw the dropper top on the bottle and leave it alone for several weeks.
The mixture will begin to ferment on its own. You’ll notice the rubber dropper top start to expand like a bubble. Resist the urge to open the bottle or you’ll interrupt the proper fermentation process. After a few week, the bubble in the dropper top will start to dissipate. When all the air is gone out of the dropper-top, the eyeliner is ready. The fermentation prevents the eyeliner from going bad in much the same way that fermentation prevents wine from going bad. A bottle of this eyeliner will last for several years when properly fermented.
The mix of blackberry and blueberry gives this eyeliner a beautiful maroon-purple shade. Apply a coat, and if you want it darker, apply another coat of the juice right over the first coat. I’ve found it’s easiest to apply it with something hard, rather than a soft brush, as the brush just tends to suck up the liquid leaving nothing to apply to the face. I usually just use a small bit of a twig to apply it and that seems to work well. When you’re ready to take off your eyeliner, it washes right off with a little bit of soap and water.Β
There are several benefits of this natural eye makeup, compared with store bought eyeliner; the obvious benefit being the total lack of noxious chemicals. It’s also very inexpensive. If you have your own black caps and blueberries, it’ll be a free eyeliner. Also, unlike conventional makeup, this stuff is actually good for the skin. Both blackberries and blueberries help prevent free radical damage. It even smells good, like a raspberry tart.
And as a final benefit, if you have kids, this works great as an inexpensive temporary tattoo as well.

You’re so clever to come up with this. I have one daughter who’s allergic to almost every type of eye makeup around, even the natural brands. This looks amazing though, so will definitely have to try making it. Not sure if I’ve told you this, but I live in New Zealand (bottom of the planet), where it’s summer right now. I have blueberries readily available and blackberries almost ready in my garden. This will be a fun mother/daughter project, so thanks for a great post. I’ll let you know how we get on when the time comes π
Yeah, I’d love to hear how it turns out for you guys when you try it. And enjoy your summer weather down there, it’s a “balmy” 7 degrees up here, lol.
