DIY Tie-dye Mandala Tapestry
In this video I’ll show you how to make a DIY tie-dye mandala tapestry, using basic simple tie-dye techniques and stencil cutouts.
MATERIALS USED:
An old white sheet or blanket to tie-dye
Strips of scrap fabric or rubber bands to tie the sections
Plastic gloves
Spray bottles
Powder dye colors: pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple
Bucket of water
Buddha, lotus, and elephant silhouettes (found on Google)
Black felt
Spray adhesive
You may have noticed from some of my earlier projects that I kind of have a thing for color. (You’re not gonna find me preaching the benefits of neutral π ) And so anytime I can DIY tie-dye anything, I’m usually up for it. In this case, my aunt was getting rid of an old blanket, so I knew it’d be perfect to use as my bedroom wall.
There were a couple parts to making this that I kind of forgot to film. And one of those is the the fact that you want to make sure your entire blanket is damp before you start dying it, or the colors won’t penetrate the layers as well. You’ll also want to make sure that you dip your gloves in a bucket of water between each section to clean them off. Otherwise you’ll end up mixing colors when you squeeze the sections.
Leave your blanket wrapped in the plastic for at least five hours to ensure a good penetration of color. You also want to make sure you rinse your blanket well once you’ve finished dying. If you use your washing machine, wash it on cold with nothing else in the washer. (And be sure to rinse out the washer before doing your next load of laundry).
Or you can do what I did, and hang your tapestry on a clothesline outside and let a few rains rinse it down. Or if the weather is not cooperative, spray it down with a garden hose a few times to wash out the excess dye.
