This week’s tutorial is a Doctor Who sonic screwdriver DIY based on the design of the screwdriver used by the 8th Doctor.

MATERIALS USED:
1 sheet of standard sized cardstock
Pencil or marker to roll the cardstock around
Silver adhesive foil or tinfoil
Scissors (Duck tape scissors work well with sticky foil)
Scrap of gold foil or gold paint and paintbrush
Red plastic gem (optional)
Scrap of red paper
Multi-surface glue

The base of this DIY Doctor Who sonic screwdriver is very similar to the bases I use in constructing lightsabers. It’s simply craft foam and cardboard covered in silver foil.

The silver foil is the same stuff I use on for my lightsabers, which I generally use because the adhesive back makes it very conveinient. But you can also just glue on tinfoil if you prefer. Just be careful as tinfoil tends to crumple easier and you don’t want crease marks on your screwdriver.

The red plastic gem was an optional adornment I decided to add to make it look more fancy, but it’s not necessary. If you prefer, you can just cap off your red cone with another scrap of red paper cut to size. For the gold stripe, I just used a scrap of gold foil I had, but you could also just paint on a gold stripe.
