Fun Ways of Hiding Easter Baskets and Eggs

Tired of the traditional method of hiding Easter baskets? Try spicing it up by sending everyone on a hunt for clues.

Fun Ways of Hiding Easter Baskets and Eggs

In my family, we didn’t reserve finding eggs and hiding Easter baskets just for Easter morning. We had several hunts throughout the season. (Yes, the one on Easter morning was the best, since the Easter Bunny would come by and fill our baskets with something delicious). But we had fun hiding our own empty baskets before the bunny came too.

At my house, however, we didn’t just hide the baskets for each other to find. We made it an entire quest (often lasting for several hours on the hunt). Everyone had to follow a trail of “clue eggs” that would lead to the prize; the Easter basket. If you hide your own Easter baskets and eggs for Easter, it’d easy to implement. (And if you prefer to have the Easter Bunny hiding your basket, leave a note for him to try this method).

The Setup

Fun Ways of Hiding Easter Baskets and Eggs How it works is each person is assigned a certain color of plastic Easter egg. (Though I’m not generally a huge fan of plastic, in this case I’m ok with it, since plastic Easter eggs are reusable pretty much forever). Inside each egg is a piece of paper with a clue written on it. The clue leads to the next egg, and the next egg, and so on. And eventually after a predetermined amount of clue eggs, one leads to the hidden Easter basket. The clues don’t have to be anything very difficult. Just something fun to lead someone to the next egg.

In my family, songs or movie quote are some of our favorite clues to use. So the quote from Christmas Vacation “she falls in a well, eyes go crossed” would lead us to find an egg somewhere around the water well. “Stairway to Heaven” implies there is an egg hiding somewhere around one of the stairways. (Of course the fun part of that one was that the finder really has to work to locate the egg. We have basement stairs, attic stairs, tree house stairs, and stairs leading down to the woodland creek. So it’s usually a bit of a search for a “stairway” egg.)

Generally we have several people doing this. So rather than one person hiding everything, we have each person hide the eggs and basket of another. That way everyone gets to hide something and everyone gets to find something. By assigning a separate egg color to each person, you make sure no one ends up finding an egg they weren’t meant to find.

Hiding Easter Baskets First

Friends in their 20s getting ready to hunt Easter egg clues (you’re never too old!)

The easiest way to hide eggs and baskets with this method is to start with the basket and work back from there. Hide the Easter basket first, then stick a clue leading to the basket in an egg. Hide that egg. Stick a clue leading to that egg’s hiding place in a second egg, and hide the second egg. Stick a clue leading to the second egg in a third egg, then hide the third egg. And so on. Then the final egg doesn’t get hidden. You hand it to the hunter, they open it, and get the first clue on their trail.

And remember hiding Easter baskets and eggs doesn’t have to be just for the little ones. You’re never too old to enjoy this more advanced form of egg hunting. My friends and I still do this every few years, though of course, our clues have gotten a little more complex now.

Give it a try. Bring out your inner child!
