Guinan Costume: DIY Guinan Hat from Star Trek TNG

So this week it’s everyone’s favorite flyer-saucer hat wearing bartender, Guinan! In this tutorial I’ll show you how to make a fairly simple DIY Guinan hat.

DIY Guinan Hat from Star Trek TNG

MATERIALS USED:
Old cardboard box
Teal green fabric
1 pack of teal bias tape (The color I used was called Mediterranean)
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Sewing pins

I had several requests for this costume fairly close together actually (so maybe there’s some Guinan celebration going on that I don’t know about…) I’m convinced they must have bobby-pinned this hat to Whoopi’s head in order to get it to stay on. So short of doing that, I made a few adjustments to the inside to help it stay on better, though I still wouldn’t try walking around with this thing during a stiff breeze…

The teal fabric I used for this was an old tablecloth I found for $4 in the Salvation Army, so check your local 2nd hand shops. The color doesn’t quite match what Guinan actually had in Star Trek, but I chose this to match a skirt I’d also found in the Salvation Army, which I’ll be using for the tunic next week. So stayed tuned for that.
