How to Make a Broom Corn Swag

A broom corn swag will last for many years as broom corn dries very easily. They make lovely autumn decorations.

How to Make a Broom Corn Swag

You will need:
Broom corn (also called ornamental grass/sorghum)
Scissors
Ribbon
Wreath Wire
Various Dried Flowers
String (I used bailing twine for a natural look)

Broom corn is the same stuff they make the classic “corn brooms” out of, but on these brooms, I’ve left the seeds on the stalks which is what gives them their beautiful color. You can find broom corn for sale in the autumn at the same time as regular cornstalks. (If you’re a local, feel free to ask me about it. I usually have a milk can full of it for sale at the farm markets).

Broom corn’s flexibility allows for mistakes. Also because there are so many heads of broom corn on one swag, it doesn’t require each head to be perfect. Statice and straw flowers can easily be dried using the air-dry method.

Will broom corn attract mice if used in your house?

    • Mice do eat broomcorn. If it’s somewhere in a well used area, they don’t bother it, but they will eat them apart in storage. So it’s best to display it for the season, and then store in a mouse-proof container.

Do the stalks need to be soaked before using them in craft projects?
