MATERIALS USED:
Needle and thread
Scissors or x-acto knife

If you’re just repairing a garment where the button has fallen off, then you probably won’t need to know how to sew a buttonhole by hand. But if you’re making your own clothes or a costume (since that’s mostly what we do around here πŸ˜‰ ) you may find yourself in need of a buttonhole.

Most sewing machines come with a buttonhole function, which will do most of the work for you. But as many of my followers prefer to sew by hand, thought I’d do a tutorial showing how to sew a buttonhole by hand instead. It’s pretty simple once you get the hang of it, and it will protect your buttonholes from fraying. Basically it consists of a blanket stitch going around a slitted opening in the garment.
